Planning a vacation at Shimla?
Then don’t miss Kalka-Shimla train ride, try it out, it’s great fun!!
Board toy train at Kalka and have a wonderful journey to Shimla through picturesque mountains.
It is a narrow gauge, 96 Km long, single track rail line connecting Kalka and Shimla. This line was opened for traffic on 9th November 1903 and it is serving thousands of passengers since then.
The journey offers a panoramic feast of picturesque Himalayas from Kalka through several points like Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat and Barog.
Originally 107 tunnels were built on the line, but after discarding 4 tunnels, now the route takes you through 102 tunnels. Funny thing is that last tunnel before Shimla still carries tunnel no. 103 as the place has become a famous landmark of town!!
The line passes through 864 bridges (whopping !!). Just peep out from open window when train takes turns on the tracks and you would see 2 tier and 3 tier multi arched galleried bridge constructions, looking like ancient Roman aqueducts.
Till 1971, steam locomotives used to ply on the route and in 1971, they were replaced by diesel locomotives.
Don’t forget to capture train and you in a camera!!
