Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple
The central attraction of the town, this temple accommodates the Shiva Lingam that Lord Rama erected to get rid of the sin of killing demon king Ravana (who was actually a Brahmin). Tall gopuram, huge statue of Nandi Bull and the world’s largest corridor are the highlights of the temple which is also admired for its sculpted beauty. If visiting for the first time, prefer to hire a tourist guide, but only after negotiations.
Agniteertham
It is believed that taking bath in the 22 holy kunds (ponds) at this place near the seashore is essential before offering prayers to the lingam. Prayers are also offered by the Hindus for the blessings of their ancestors here.
Five-faced Hanuman Temple
The temple is dedicated to Monkey God Hanuman who served as the lieutenant of Lord Rama’s army against Ravana’s army. The temple has bounders brought from the sacred bridge (called Rama Setu) built by Rama and his monkey soldiers to reach Lanka where Rama’s wife Sita was imprisoned by the demon king.
Kothandaramaswamy Temple
A historic temple with great heritage value, it is one of the must visit places at Rameswharam. The main attraction is the wall painting depicting scenes from Ramayana.
Rama Setu (Adam’s Bridge)
Mentioned in both Hindu and Christian Mythologies, the bridge made of floating limestone shoals and connecting India with Sri Lanka is no less than a wonder.
Many other places for sightseeing in Rameshwaram include Gandamadana Parvatham (a hillock believed to have Rama’s footprints), Satchi Hanuman Temple, Bandrakaliamman Temple, Jada Teertham and Villoondi Teertham. Activities here include scuba diving, bird watching, glass boat rides and swimming.
