But one thing that you should not miss out – CHIKKI. Chikki is a sweet made of gud, sugar and mixed with many ingredients like groundnuts, cashew nuts, almonds, khobara (desiccated coconut) and much more.
The types of chikki are crush chikki, cashew chikki, coconut chikki, dry fruit chikki, til (sesame) chikki and so on.
There is interesting history behind Lonavala and chikki to become synonyms to each other. Maganlal Agarwal, a sweet shop owner in Lonavala, used to sell gud dani (made of peanuts, jiggery and ghee) to poor railway workers who used to work for GIP railways during years of 1880-1900. It was cheap in price, it was nutritious, it used to help the workers in severe cold and it became too popular. It became so popular, that even railways decided to sell packaged chikki in trains to its passengers.Later it became an identity of Lonavala.
Also don’t forget to taste variety of fudges. Chocolate fudge, mango fudge, walnut fudge are most famous fudges in Lonavala.
There are many famous shops in Lonavala and Khandala, Maganlal chikki eing the most famous. You can also try chikki and fudge at Purohit chikki, National chikki etc.
