This temple which stands on the left bank of River Bhagirathi is amongst the chief attractions of Gangotri town. Goddess Ganga is the reigning deity of this temple. Besides the temple, there is a big rock called the ‘Bhagirath Shilla’. As per a legend, King Bhagirath prayed for descend of Goddess Ganga on this rock. The temple is said to have been built in the 18th century on the orders of a Gorkha General named Amar Singh Thapa.

This is another interesting spot where the Shivaling in the river becomes visible when water recedes in winter.
