Auroville – a beautiful experimental township
Auroville (city of dawn) belongs to humanity, Auroville is a place of constant and unending education & continuous progress.The concept of Auroville – a township dedicated to an experiment in human unity took place between 1960-70.
On 28th February 1968, around 5000 people assembled near the banyan tree for inauguration ceremony attended by representatives from countries worldwide and from Indian states.
In the middle of the town, you can see Matru Mandir (temple of the Mother), which is widely acclaimed for its original and outstanding architecture. Silence is maintained (and mandatory) inside Matru Mandir and this ensures tranquil nature of the same. Inside the Mandir a spiral ramp leads to the main dome and chamber made of marble. The surface of the dome is made of gold. In the centre, there is a crystal ball in gold mount. This ball glows even with a single ray of sunlight that comes from top of the structure.
There are 4 zones in the city – residential, cultural, industrial and international.
A visit to Auroville would be unique for any traveller.
