Mashobra is an idyllic little town, situated in the North India state of Himachal Pradesh. The picturesque town is located 10 km. from state capital Shimla, along the historic Hindustan-Tibet Road and at an altitude of 2,146 m. above sea-level. Surrounded by pristine forests of oaks, pines and cedar, it is a perfect destination for tourists. It is among those tourist places gaining popularity due to their untouched and unexplored beauty. The snow-clad mountains and lush green vegetation along the valley are a view to reckon. With its abundant flora and fauna, Mashobra forms a part of Shimla Reserve Forest Sanctuary and catchments. Important tourist information is that one of the two retreat homes for the President of India is situated in this Sylvan town of Mashobra. Biographies of Lady Mountbatten and Lady Edwina point that Mashobra was developed in the 18th century by British Governor General of India, Lord Dalhousie. Old structures built during the British Raj can be accessed till date and are among the must visit places at Mashobra. Extremely cold winters and pleasant summers mark the region’s climatic conditions.

The well-maintained restaurants of Whispering Pine and other hotels offer variety of food to suit the taste-buds of tourists. They also have the option to try local delicacies at the various eateries in the town. Non-vegetarian food cooked with minimum spices, but hot with chillies and steamed rice is staple food of the hill people. But tourists can have palate of their choice.

Tourists can purchase hand-made warm clothes of traditional designs from a fair held in late summer. Designs and figurines crafted out of wood and trinkets in semi precious stones are also available as souvenirs. Pickles and fruit squashes are also sold at very reasonable rates.

  • Craignano (about 6 km.): Craignano is known for its beautiful landscape and a resort of the same name. The place is named after Italian countess of Craignano, who had a summer residence here.
  • Shimla (about 10 km.): The state capital and one of the most visited North India hill retreat, Shimla is known for its colonial charm, temples and unlimited natural magnificence.
  • Naldehra (about 12 km.): One of the most popular golf courses invites international golfers to this small hill resort. Lavish greenery and unpolluted environment makes it the holiday choice of many.
  • Kufri (about 8 km.): Another popular hill resort in the region, it is famous for attractions like Mahasu Peak, Indira Tourist Park and Kufri Fun World.
