One of the major attractions of Tamil Nadu, Udaygiri Fort blankets an area of about 90 acres dotted by isolated hills. Originally built in 17th century, the fort was later reconstructed by Maharaja Marthanda Varma of Travancore. The fort was once renowned as Dillanai Kottai – De Lennoy’s Fort as tribute to the Dutch Admiral.
Constructed of granite blocks, the fort has a grand stand at the entry level that has the history of the fort in a granite placard. The fort acted as a manufacturing and store house for military equipments like cannons and guns. It was also used as a jail for war prisoners arrested in the campaign against Tipu Sultan.
The fort is now converted into a biodiversity park. Once can explore a variety of plants and animal species in this fort. The view of lovely peacock dancing and swans and deerwandering around the park is enamouring. The fort is popular among kids too for its small play area where children can enjoy on slides and swings. A visit to Udaygiri Fort presents a unique amalgamation of architecture, history and nature.
Visitors to this place can also explore nearby attractions like Nagercoil, Suchindram, Kumarakovil, Mondaikaddu Bhagavathy Amman Temple, Vattakottai and Pechipparai Dam etc.
