Popular as one of jewels of Nagpur, Sitabuldi Fort (also known as Sitabardi or Seetabuldee Fort) overlooks the city from the top of a hillock. The fort and the area around it span over the twin hills called Badi Tekri (big hill) and Choti Tekri (small hill). Believed to be named after two brothers Shitlaprasad and Badriprasad, the fort came into prominence in the 19th century under the British rule.
The fort served as the battleground in 1817 in which the British defeated the Marathas. In 1857, the British executed their enemies from Mysore at the fort. One can find the graveyard of the English soldiers and a mosque dedicated to the Muslim martyrs. Mahatma Gandhi was also imprisoned for a brief period at the fort and one can visit the cell where he was kept.
Today, the fort is under the control of the Indian Army. It opens for the public only on three days – Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15) and Maharashtra Day (May 01).
