An important national park of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Nagarhole is also a popular Tiger Reserve. Covered with dense forests and home to many spectacular streams and waterfalls, the park is well-known for impressive numbers of tigers, elephants and Indian bison. Once a hunting reserve of the Mysore rulers, it is today one of the most visited wildlife reserves in the South India.
Leopard, wild dog, sloth bear, jackal, striped hyena, sambar, chital, four-horned antelope, civets and flying squirrels are among other popular wild animals at Nagarhole. The park is also recognized as an important bird area with species like vultures, lesser adjutant, wood-pigeons, eagles, darters, oriental ibis, parakeets and hornbills commonly spotted.
Safari trips are organized twice a day in jeeps and elephant rides are also available. You need to pay additional fees for safari and guides. The park roads are strictly closed for traffic from 06:00 p.m. to 06:00 a.m.
Connectivites
Road:
: Bangalore-Mangalore Highway, NH 209 and many state highways connect the national park with top destinations of the region. Each of these roads is in good condition and supports transportation in the form of buses and rented vehicles.
Railway:
The nearest railhead is Mysore, which is about 90 km. from the park. Tourists are suggested to hire a taxi from Mysore to conveniently access the park’s main gate.
Airway:
Mysore’s domestic airport is about 92 km. away and is connected to Bangalore and Chennai. The nearest international airport is at Bangalore, about 260 km. away. Taxis can be hires from these airports for the road journey.
