Popularized as “Klu-Kkhyil,’ meaning water spirits, Likir Gompa is known to be the oldest monastery or gompa in Ladakh. Built by Tibetan monks, Likir Gompa is a famous pilgrimage centre for the Buddhist followers.
 
Being the wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, this gompa houses the 75 feet gleaming statue of Buddha. Believed to get its name from the two serpent spirits – Nanda and Taksako, the gompa houses a wonderful collection of wall paintings that portrays 35 impressive Buddhas and 16 Arhats.
 
Likir Gompa also has a museum that mansion, several hundred year old Tibetan artefacts. A trip to Likir is incomplete, if you miss its famous annual festival. The major highlight of this festival is the Cham Dance that is performed by Lamas in colourful attires.
 
Other than Likir Gompa, tourist can enjoy nearby attractions like Ldomra, Leh, Zanskar, Kargil and Sumur. Visitors can shop for shawl, apricots and woollen clothes in the Likir Village at an affordable price.

Connectivites

Road: The most convenient way to reach this place is from the Kashmir Valley on the Srinagar-Leh road. You can see gorgeous areas before entering Likir Gompa.

Railway: There is no railway station for Ladakh. However, you can reach the place through Jammu Tawai railway station (about 674 km.). One can take the bus service to reach Likir Gompa.

Airway: Leh Airport (about 46 km.) is the nearest airport to reach Likir Gompa. Daily flights from Delhi, Chandigarh and Mumbai are available for the place.
