The mesmerizing topography of Gulmarg is home to some of the endangered Himalayan wildlife species. Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve spread over 180 sq. km. area offers shelters to the species like musk deer, snow leopard, red fox, hangul, serow, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan brown bear and many more. In addition, the place turns into a bird-watching paradise, when numerous bird species migrate to the region. Some of the most beautiful birds that can be spotted here include European hoopoe, monal, blue rock pigeon, griffon vulture, pheasants, jungle crow, Kashmir roller and many more.
Enjoying an average elevation of around 3,500 m., the reserve also boasts of abundant flora. A huge variety of herbs, shrubs and coniferous trees like deodara, abies pindrow and pinus griffithii adorn the whole area, offering eye-pleasing beauty to the visitors. You can’t resist admiring the tranquil and refreshing atmosphere of the reserve which also boasts of enthralling views of mountains and pine forests.
Connectivites
Road:
Take a taxi from Srinagar (about 48 km. away) to reach the reserve and enjoy indescribable natural beauty throughout the journey. The road condition is good and one gets to explore the most striking facets of Himalayan magnificence.
Railway:
About 63 km. from the reserve is the closest railway station located in Srinagar. Jammu Tawi offering better train connectivity is another option, though located about 350 km. away. Taxis can be hired from each of these stations.
Airway:
Srinagar Airport (about 57 km. away) offers convenient access to those who prefer to travel by air. Excellent taxi services form the airport make the subsequent road journey convenient.
