Located on the Elephanta Island, the Elephanta Caves are created using the solid basalt rock. Built on a height of 60,000 sq.ft., the caves symbolise the celestial mountain dwelling of Lord Shiva – Mount Kailash. Elephanta Islandthat houses the famous Elephanta Caves is named after a colossal elephant (popularly known as Gharapuri) that was once found on the Elephanta Island.

Elephanta Caves are declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known to be one of the biggest historical attractions of Mumbai, Elephanta Caves date back to the 5th century BC. Any trip to Mumbai is incomplete, if you miss the wonderful Elephanta Caves.

These impressive caves comprise of the main chamber, courtyards and numerous eye-catching shrines. Contrived in correspondence with the focal points worked out in a geometric Mandala, the design represents the huge field of energy. The large hall inside the cave temple has nine engraved panels that portray Lord Shiva in different moods. Although, very few details are available on the artists who carved theseglorious temples, it is clear that the structure is created out of gauzy rock and primitive tools.

Other places of tourist interest near Elephanta Caves are the Gateway of India, Flora Fountain, Crawford Market, Prince of Wales Museum, Marine Drive and Hanging Gardens.
