Chimmini wildlife sanctuary was developed in 1984 and is a storehouse of biodiversity. It contains various kinds of evergreen trees, different species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish. There are around 110 varieties of birds and it is not difficult to spot the migratory birds during their season.
An exciting tourist attraction inside this sanctuary is the Chimmony dam which is built above the Chimmony River. This place is bliss for all butterfly lovers because of their rich population. Different expedition activities like trekking, bamboo rafting, camping are available for the adventure travellers.
However, a prior permission needs to be taken for camping activities. Special trekking path is provided in the sanctuary for trekkers.

Road:
Chimmini Wildlife sanctuary can be reached by road very easily. Many private and government bus services are available from major states of Kerala like Ernakulum (about 79 km.), Thrissur (about 40 km.) and Kochi (about 88 km.). Several buses and taxis ply regularly to reach the wildlife sanctuary.
Railway:
Thrissur Railway Station (about 39 km.) and Ernakulum Railway Station (about 80 km.) are the nearest rail head to reach Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary comfortably.
Airway:
Nearest airport to reach Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary is Cochin International Airport (about 56 km.). Regular flights from major cities are available to reach this place. Buses and private cabs can be hired for reaching the sanctuary from the airport.
