According to the legend, Lord Rama, while returning from Lanka after killing demon king Ravana and freeing his consort Sita, decided to worship Lord Shiva to get rid of the sin of Brahmin Hatya (Ravana actually being a Brahmin by birth). He commanded Hanuman to bring a Shiva Lingam from Kashi (the modern day Varanasi). As Hanuman failed to fulfil the command on time, Sita made a Lingam using beach sand. When Hanuman brought Lingam from kashi, he was disappointed and felt guilty of being late. Rama worshipped both the Lingams and requested Shiva to stay at the place forever. Shiva complied and established himself as a Jyotirlinga at Rameshwaram. The Lingam made by Sita is worshipped as the Jyotirlinga inside the main temple.
