Ganpatipule – The Beach Personally Chosen by the Almighty


The invigorating Konkan Coastline along the Arabian Sea blesses India with some marvellous beaches. While many of them have gained international limelight, few are surprisingly explored by lesser numbers of tourists. Ganpatipule in the state of Maharashtra is one such gem which has started attracting visitors with different holiday moods.
Ganpatipule Temple
The star attraction of the place is the temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha which accommodates the swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of the lord. It is believed that the place served as one of the many abodes of Ganesha and the idol was found some 400 years ago in the soil. The legend encourages hundreds of pilgrims to throng the temple located at the base of the hill.

The Beach
The pristine, clean and crowd-free beach of Ganpatipule is a picturesque natural vista with breathtaking views of the limitless sea. Fringes of coconut, mango and cashew trees and white sand create heart-warming contrast which is no less than a visual treat. Relax at the beach, take a leisurely stroll or climb a rocky cliff to savour the extraordinary grandeur. Fresh and pollution-free cool breeze is indeed the add-on to the joy. Adventure-minded visitors can enjoy boating on a variety of boats like kayaks, motor boats, banana boats and row boats. Water scooters are among the other wonderful rides available.

Fabulous Excursions
Many picturesque villages, old temples and memorials and historical sites can be visited while holidaying at Ganpatipule. Some popular options include:

Jaigad Fort and Lighthouse: Located atop a cliff some 15 km. from the beach, the fort is an outstanding spot for the history lovers. Few miles away is the lighthouse from where the magnificent views of the region can be enjoyed.

Velneshwar: A popular pilgrimage site known for its temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, it also boasts of another exciting beach.

Malgund: Home to many memorials, the village lets one peep into the Konkani lifestyle. Pawas and many other villages are also worth visiting.

Ganpatipule is best accessed by road from places as far as Mumbai. The closest railway stations are at Bhoke and Ratnagiri while the closest airport is at Kolhapur. Plan a trip in the second half of October to welcome the onset of pleasant weather.
